The global shift towards prioritising being ‘present’ in our lives and honing the art of noticing is now embedded in the collective consciousness. Current world events have made it imperative to find small moments of peace and to switch off external noise. Nowadays, our home is indeed our castle in every sense of the word. Thinking of my special place at home, I want to encourage friends, family, and readers to share their own safe spaces. Perhaps it will inspire you to create a sacred space if you don’t already have one. I’ve named this feature Kumbla because it conjures up my idea of a sacred space. The word ‘kumbla’ comes from the work of Erna Brodber, Jamaican writer (sociologist and social activist), entitled Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home where the ‘kumbla’ represents protection.
On weekends, you might find me in cosy corner with my Nyha Graphics supplies. I’ve got a sweatshirt, coffee mug and stationery. It was love at first sight. Naomi’s ((aka Nyah) whimical interpretation of black girlhood and boyhood is so uplifting. I often say that I hate to use my purchases because they so beautiful! Yes, it’s safe to say I am a big fan of her creations. Naturally, I had to find out how Naomi creates her sacred space.
Now, Naomi, tells us about her special place:
My favourite place is my bedroom bay window. It’s upstairs, away from the family hustle and bustle. I like to sit and watch the world go by, taking time to journal, meditate, pray, or read something mindful.
The space itself is soft and comforting, with pink and plush tones, layered cushions, and cosy blankets. I’m surrounded by plants that bring life and freshness to the room, while a salt lamp in the corner helps cleanse the space and gives off a warm, gentle glow as evening comes. I also love how the changing light throughout the day shifts the mood of the room.
Naomi’s spaces look! The perfect place for a mindful moment. I hope you enjoyed this feature. Find Nyha Graphics on Instagram and shop her collections on Etsy.
