The global shift towards prioritising being ‘present’ in our lives and honing the art of noticing is now embedded in the collective consciousness. Current world events have made it imperative to find small moments of peace and to switch off the external noise. Nowadays, our home is indeed our castle in every sense of the word. Thinking of my special place at home, I want to encourage family, friends and readers to share their own safe spaces. Perhaps it will inspire you to create a sacred space if you don’t already have one.

I’ve named this feature Kumbla because it conjures up my idea of a sacred space. The word ‘kumbla’ comes from the work of Erna Brodber, Jamaican writer (sociologist and social activist), entitled Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home
where the ‘kumbla’ represents protection.

Part of creating the home we desire is finding the right home fragrance to conjure an aesthetic. As a result, I attended the London Home Fragrance show to find out what’s happening in the industry. At the show, I met Amanda, Brand Owner of Jamonyx. Jamonyx is known for candles, room perfume, diffusers and skincare. Naturally, I had to inquire what space in her home is sacred. This is Amanda’s feature, and here she tells us about her kumbla.

My favourite place in my home is the kitchen because it is where I feel the calmest and ‘at home’. I love cooking for my family, friends and pets! Preparing meals is one of the ways I show my love and care; when my family join in, it’s loud. We have music playing & lots of laughter!

The kitchen is more than just a place to make food—it is where I experiment with flavours and create new recipes. This passion for creating also connects closely with my business.

Just as I enjoy combining ingredients to make delicious meals, I also love blending beautiful scents and developing natural skincare products. Both cooking and creating fragrances require patience, imagination, and attention to detail.

Whether I am preparing a family meal or crafting a new aromatherapy blend, I enjoy the process of turning simple ingredients into something special that people can enjoy. For me, the kitchen is a place of inspiration, comfort, and creativity. Cooking is my meditation, which makes it my favourite room in the kitchen.
