The global shift towards prioritising being ‘present’ in our lives and honing the art of noticing is now embedded in the collective consciousness. Current world events have made it imperative to find small moments of peace and to switch off the external noise. Nowadays, our home is indeed our castle in every sense of the word. Thinking of my special place at home, I want to encourage friends, family, and readers to share their own safe spaces. Perhaps it will inspire you to create a sacred space if you don’t already have one. I’ve named this feature Kumbla because it conjures up my idea of a sacred space. The word ‘kumbla’ comes from the work of Erna Brodber, Jamaican writer (sociologist and social activist), entitled Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home , where the ‘kumbla’ represents protection.
It has been a while since I have done a Kumbla feature. Now that spring is showing signs of entering the chat. We will soon be doing our big spring clean and I thought about the power of home scents. This feature is of Althea James, the owner of Althie Lifestyle. She handcrafts candles, reed diffusers, and wax melts for the home. So, how does a busy entrepreneur relax? Althea’s tells us about her special place at home:
My favourite place – my safe place – is the corner of my living room. I curl up on my corner sofa that’s beneath my scented candle shelf by the window. It’s where soft light filters in, my Althie Lifestyle candles gently fragrances the space, and I can either reflect quietly or switch-off with the TV. Wrapped in my cosy fleece throw, everything feels calm, grounded, and familiar.
It’s also where my scented candles come to life, creating moments of comfort and intention.
