As a family, we don’t eat nearly enough fish as we should. Yet when it comes to takeaways as a treat, we like a good fish and chip meal. Recently, we took the Thameslink train to Brighton. It was the first time we have EVER been to Brighton by public transport. Usually, when we go up, we visit family and friends or go swimming in Salt Dean, so a car was needed. This trip was a treat for the kids because they had finished term exams and wanted fish and chips. If you didn’t know, we don’t mess around with our food. We like to go to the source for authenticity where possible. Whether it’s a vegan Chinese in Balham, Turkish mixed grill in Chingford or fish and chips on the coast in Brighton . Believe the hype, Captain’s chippy in Brighton does this British classic well!

Captain’s Chippy

Initially, we had planned to dine at another fish and chip establishment, but it turned out to be a 20-minute walk away. Trust me, a 20-minute walk during a heatwave was not appealing. So, hubby used Goggle search to find the nearest chippy. Captain’s had good reviews. Off we went!

Captain’s was opened in 1990. Due to their years of experience and dedication, they have mastered the craft. They have it all: location, service, ambience and food.

We rocked up to Captain’s just as they opened at midday. It’s located on the Lower Promenade, Madeira Drive, Brighton. You can order takeaway from the front of house, dine in or out. If you eat out in their seating area, you are guaranteed a sea view. However, if you eat inside, you can only view the sea from some vantage points.

Since the restaurant was still empty, we could see Brighton Pier (FYI: visitors now pay £2 to enter The Pier) even though we sat in the centre of the restaurant.

What We Ate

We all ordered large cod and chips, and it didn’t disappoint! Captain’s say they serve speciality fresh fish and chips and use a triple filtration system. Now, I don’t know anything about filtration, but I do know good food. Their fish and chips were banging! It was on the level with our favourite chippy on the Isle of Wight, Wright’s. The chips were chunky and fluffy in the middle. Then, the fish batter was crispy, encasing moist and flaky fish, and so tasty. It was a melt-in-your-mouth forkful of pleasure.

The meal cost just under £64 for the four of us. It was served in boxes, which was perfect for us. albeit hubby says it would have tasted even better on plates but, I am a slow eater. They all get impatient with me, so it was handy because on this occasion, the kids couldn’t finish their meal. We took away what we could eat to have on the beach later.

We didn’t order any sides or extras but Captain’s also serve battered sausage, saveloy, pies and other dishes.

We were all hot, so we only had ice-cold water to refresh us. I did spot the sexy cocktails other patrons ordered as they began piling in. Drinks-wise, their list includes: soft drinks, beers, ciders, slush puppies and Long Island, Moscow Mule, Bellinis, Mojitos, etc.
