Scent layering is not new. Many of us do it naturally without thinking about it. We use our bath and body products, then finish with perfume. Brides certainly know about this practice to ensure their scent lasts for the festivities. During her red-carpet interview for 2026 Grammys, Rapper/Singer Doechii said she was wearing the new Mui Mui (probably Miutine) mixed with Versace in the purple bottle (likely Dylan Purple). Celebrities are vague about the fragrances they wear because it’s their signature. However, the scent musicians wear is interesting. According to John of Frag-Jitsu‬, the descriptors in music transfer to perfume. For example, he has noticed that the Lydian mode of music, which has an atmospheric, dreamy sound (like the Jurassic Park soundtrack and Dream by Fleetwood Mac) makes him think of the perfume Interlude Woman. Home scents can also be layered. Let’s explore scent layering and how you can create your unique scent.

The Art Of Scent Layering

Scent layering is popular in the Middle East. There, they layer natural oils. Bazaar Arabia Columnist Demi Rawling suggests that you have to be like a chef to create your layering combo. She says: You need to figure out what ingredients complement each other and build your signature scent from there. To give you an idea: citrus fragrances often complement light woody fragrances and some transparent floral scents. She believes that when we layer our perfumes, ‘It is the fragrance equivalent of bespoke haute couture. It’s all about discovering what works and what doesn’t on your skin and for your olfactory sense.

At Boots Battersea, their perfume section has a machine where you can enter the notes you like, and it will suggest perfumes that fit your taste.

Then, applying Rawling’s theory, select a complementary scent to match the former scent. Alternatively, there’s PerfumeTok  and AI to help you with the steps to layering perfume Bonus TIP: Hydrated skin is your friend. Try using a matching body lotion or oil to your fragrance. Aroma molecules evaporate more slowly on well-hydrated skin.  Alternatively, layer your perfume over an unscented lotion to make your fragrance last longer without being too heavy.

Benefits Of Scent Layering

Beyond the TikTok of it all, scent has benefits to our mental health. Smell, memory and health are connected. Professor Sanddeep Robert Datta of neurobiology at Harvard Medical School says, scent is “deeply tied to our cognitive centers, our emotional centers, and our memory centers. “We’re dependent on it for a sense of well-being and centeredness in the world.”

When you think about it, what do we do when we smell something foul? We either leave the area or hold our breath. Studies show that every breath with odour molecules activates these limbic areas associated with emotional experience and memory retrieval.

FYI: Purest may say mixing scents disrupts the perfumer’s creation. It’s an art form.

One day I went perfume hunting and I left the shops with frageneced strips to remind me which was which. I walked around town smelling in a perfume haze and a headache! Be thoughtful and intentional if you decide to try scent layering. If you get it right, scent layering can work and positively impact your mood.

Scent Layering In The Home

As well as your body, you can layer scents in your home. Naturally, the way you layer scents in your home will be slightly different. Consider how you want to feel in your home. Select a scent per room, but ensure they complement each other. For example, my personal preference is wine-ish scents for the dining room, which complements the florals in the living room. Any combo with neroli is a winner for me.

TIP: for a calming space, scents like lavender, sandalwood, and chamomile are well regarded Lavender is a popular choice for sleep.

Can you imagine layering your skincare scent to your room? Well, I have done so with the SBC Skincare Night Rituals range. In fact its soothing the colleciton with dreamy smell and feeling. Night Rituals is comprised of top notes of lavender, mid notes of fig, rose, and ylang-ylang with base notes of tonka beans and amber. It always puts me right after a tough day.

On the topic of matching bath, body and home scents, Aery has a wonderful gift called Dream Catcher. The collection includes a candle, pillow mist and a hand cream. It’s a dreamy combo of Orange Peel (Top notes), Lavender, Garden Herbs, Chamomile (Middle notes), and Cedarwood, Patchouli (Base notes).

While Althie Lifestyle created a lavender and coconut candle that would be lovely for a bathroom. However, brandowner Althea suggest wax melts especially after cooking for a better scent throw. Think a zesty lime or lemon combo. I’m thinking citrus in the kitchen/dining room and if it waftered and mixed with a verbana or peony in the living, that would such an uplifting scent.
