Back in July I attended the launch of the new British haircare brand Kurl Kitchen. Hosted at The Big Bakes London, I did my best not to fan girl, when I met co-founder, Fleur East. As an XFactor fan, I was glued to the screen for season 11  when she burst out of our tele.  Her infectious smile, distinct voice and big beautiful hair was everything. Creating Kurl Kitchen with her sister Keshia East who also has a stunning curly ‘fro made perfect business sense. The release of Kurl Kitchen cements a legacy for the East sisters. Just as important, it’s exciting to have a new British haircare brand. Naturalistas luv options. I for one am here for it. Before leaving the event, attendees were gifted products to try. Let’s just say, I’m thrilled by what the Kurl Kitchen is cooking.

My Natural Hair Journey

Kurl Kitchen’s launch reminded me how far I’ve come on my natural hair journey . Like many newbie naturals in the 2010’s, I experimented with butters and oils to make my own hair. However, during the first trimester of my pregnancy sweet smells made me nauseous. However, by then, I understood my hair better. I began buying hair care products. Best of all, a curl community arose. I used to attend events and swap products. It was an exciting time!

Now, in 50, I’ve gone from shoulder length curly hair back to a TWA. I had my fourth big chop in 2022. The hair on the crown of my head was thinning. Hello MENOPAUSE! Now, with a TWA, I seek products to main the general health of my hair and make my tiny curls pop.

Kurl Kitchen Products

Kurl Kitchens is comprised of five products. Putting all the products together it’s a full wash day collection. The range includes; shampoo, condition, leave-in-conditioner, curl cream and a hair oil. The packaging is simple, elegant and user-friendly. You can’t miss the pretty mint green bottles in store. If you are a newbie natural or transitioning, the range is easy to use because the products are numbere.  The product number gives an indication of the stage at which to use it. For example,  the shampoo is 01 and the hair oil is 05.

The ingredients in Kurl Kitchen are a naturalista’s dream. Many of which I’ve used pure at start of my natural hair journey. So, I know the benefits combined in a hair care product. Ingredients include: baobab oil, shea butter, coco butter and avocado. Drawing from their heritage they’ve also included wild yam and okra in their formulations.

Using Kurl Kitchen

I have been trialling Kurl Kitchen products for over one month on my hair and that of my daughter’s. I have curl thin 3b/c curly hair. While my daughter has medium thickness 2b/c wavy hair. The first thing that struck me on opening the products was the scent. Scent is just as important to me as effectiveness. Kurl Kitchen has a strong green botanical scent, in my opinion. I really like it. The lemongrass fragrence is quite uplifting. However, I mention it for those who don’t like strong smells or not sure. Just smell it first. My daughter and I both luv it.

For myself, I used all the Kurl Kitchen products.  Though, for my daughter, I use the first three. She doesn’t wear her hair out, so I opt for a different styling product when cornrowing her hair.

Frankly, I can’t rave about this collection enough. The shampoo didn’t strip our hair. The conditioner is rich and thick but not heavy or gunky. None of the products weighed down our hair. The curl cream is lush! My hair feels silky soft. Each curl so smooth springy.

FYI: 4 B curl types may need to follow up with their favourite gel for stronger definition and longer lasting twist outs and braid outs. It really depends the look they want to achieve.
Its’ two thumbs up from us for Kurl Kitchen.
