Since Covid there has been a global shift to prioritising being ‘present’ in our lives, honing the art of noticing. We’ve been inspired more than ever to create our castle, a haven in our homes. Thinking of my special place in my home, I wanted to encourage friends, family, and readers to share their special/safe space. Perhaps it might inspire you to create a space if you don’t already have one. I’ve named this feature, Kumbla. The word ‘kumbla’ comes from the work of Erna Brodber, Jamaican writer (sociologist and social activist), entitled Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home:
“The image of the kumbla derives in this novel from a popular Anancy story in which Anancy dupes Dryhead into believing that he is surrendering all of his sons to him by telling his son Tucuma … Anancy’s whole career has been one of spinning “fine white cocoons” (124), creating kumblas “designed to protect for generations”.
I finally have a reading light over my favourite chair in my special spot. It’s where I read, as well as, write my blog posts. On this chair work and relaxation meet seamlessly but I wondered what it’s like for other Content Creators. So, I reached out to Tammi. Tammy is based I Derbyshire. She’s an OG content creator in the natural hair realm. We’ve been following each other for many years but only met IRL maybe twice. Tammi says:
When I think about my home, the first place that pops into my mind is the kitchen. It’s where I do so much more than just cooking; it’s where I create memories with my loved ones and equally reminisce with those I hold dear in my heart.
In the kitchen, I forget about the worries of the world and let my hair down to have a dance alone or with my little ones. It’s a focal point where my children always pop in to see what’s cooking and tell me all about their day or sometimes just for a cuddle.
So, you see, it’s not just a kitchen but more a place I find great peace and happiness.
You can find Tammi on Instagram @tammidiversified and over on Youtube, where she creates content on natural hair and mum life.
