I can’t believe I’ve been rocking my natural hair for 14 years! It might seem like a strange thing to say, especially if your hair is naturally straight or light and wavy. However, for those of us who have coily, curly or kinky hair it’s been a journey. In 2010, I joined a mass of women who began their natural hair journey. Many of us traded tips and tricks on social media. Some started blogs and vlogs. There were meet-ups and product swaps. Just as I figured out what worked on my hair perimenopause kicked in. My hair became dry. Curlsmith is one brand that grew out of the natural hair community. They understood our traditions of mixing natural ingredients in the kitchen to create hair care products. I’ve been using a few Curlsmith products for over one year but having a Curly Discovery Kit for my hair type is a game changer!
About Curlsmith
I first became aware of Curlsmith via American naturals on social media. The brand was created by Michal and Kate Berski. From the genesis Curlsmith was in a community. The idea began with Kate and Michal’s nieces, who struggled to find suitable haircare products for their curly hair. The couple launched a curl-focused Instagram account, sharing invaluable advice, recipes, and tips.. Soon, a passionate community formed around them. Recognising the untapped market for curly and wavy hair – 70% of people have some sort of texture in their hair – they began to make their own products. Curlsmith was born.
3B Curl Type
Along my natural hair journey, I learnt that I have a combo of 3B and 3C curl type. While my curl type has not changed, during the early stage of menopause it was prone to dryness. Added to that, my curls are fine not bountiful like you usually see in many curl hair ads. As a result, I opted to undergo my fourth natural hair big chop in 2022. Shortly after my big chop I begun trying sample of Curlsmith products.
My new hair wash and style regime was a mix of the Scalp Recipes and the Anti Frizz collections with fantastic results. Now, my hair seems to be ‘normal’ again. I was sent the Curly Discovery Kit try. The kit allowed me to get to know new products that work exceedingly well on my hair as it is now.
Curly Discovery Kit
As a guide, the Curly Discovery Kit will work for ‘curly’ hair types from 2C to 3C. I’ve used it on my daughter’s hair and her hair is between a curl and a wave. The products were not heavy on her or mine. Although, if she wanted to style her hair loose, I reckon the Wavy Kit would be a better choice. The kit RRP£57 and contains:
- Essential Moisture Cleanser 88ml
- Essential Moisture Conditioner 88ml
- Hold Me Softly Balm 237ml
- Curl Defining Styling Souffle 237ml
You get everything you need in the box. Dependent on the thickness of your hair you should to get at least 3 washes from the shampoo and the conditioner. Potentially, the moisture and styling product could last for a month, depending on how often curls are refreshed and styled. Overall, there’s sufficient product to use and see how your curls respond to the hair regime with them.
The ingredients in the products include: aloe, sage rosemary, black pepper and basil extracts along with avocado oil and linseed. Oh, I can tell you stories of my kitchen experiments with these ingredients back in the day. Frankly, I’m grateful someone else is doing the work so I don’t have to.
My Results Using Curly Discovery Kit
Off the bat I can tell you my hair loved the Curl Discovery Kit. It comprises the best products for my hair to retain moisture and create luscious juicy curl styles. My hair that felt light, bouncy and hydrated. Best of all, my scalp didn’t feel striped and dry. Now I know what products from the Moisture Recipe works for me.
