If you are a first-time or second-time homeowner and suddenly have a garden to care for, read this. Gardening can be daunting, especially if you never planted a seed or owned a cactus. The bigger the space, the larger the fear. You peek at your neighbours’ lush lawns and vibrant flowers and feel dread. My advice is start slow and small. Gardening is a journey, with an exercise in patience and resilience. If the garden already has plants, learn how to care for them. You will be amazed at how watering and trimming can almost instantly improve a plant’s appearance. Flower bed overgrown with weeds? Roll up your sleeves, put on garden gloves and get to work. Create a space for plants and accessories. Don’t despair. I’ve made a list of affordable DIY garden projects get your garden ready for spring.
Raised Bed Garden Projects
You can easily repurpose materials from your indoor home improvements in the garden. Raised beds mean you don’t have to dig the soil, which is handy when you don’t have gardening materials. Use concrete blocks and/or untreated wood planks to create a bed to hone your gardening skills. Start with easy-to-grow flowers or herbs local to where you live.
Raised beds allow for better drainage, fewer weeds, and are easier on your back. They offer mobility-friendly spaces in the garden. Arrange blocks into a rectangle or square shape, fill with soil, and sow seeds. For instant gravitation add a few flower plants.
If you want to be ‘fancy’, make a herb spiral. Use stone or bricks, mount in a spiral shape, will with soil. Use the spiral to grow herbs in a small space.
Upcycled Container Garden
You often hear bring the outside, BUT you can bring the inside out as well! If your favourite ceramic containers have a chip and are not suitable for indoor use, they can be used as planters. They would make a cutesy way to display a dainty flower on a patio table.
Don’t forget buckets, tin cans and two plastic bins. Drill drainage holes, add soil, and plant. It’s for herbs and flowers in small spaces.
Child-Friendly Garden Projects.
Painted rock plant markers are a fun way to add personality to your garden. This project is one that kids could be involved in. Use palm-sized rocks and decorate with permanent marker or waterproof paints.
The only limit is your imagination, but I am sure the little one will have an abundance of it.
The rock plant markers will help you remember what you planted and add character to your green space.
Write plant names or draw simple icons on rocks and place them at the base of each plant.
Pollination Station
Who doesn’t have a soft spot for garden minibeasts and pollinators, especially the colourful ones? Creating a pollination station is a simple way to make space for nature. Again, this is a project that little ones will enjoy, but you don’t have to have children to benefit from this garden project. Use a shallow dish, fill the bottom with marbles (if kids are involved, rocks might be safer), then pour water over the top.
Pollination stations attract bees and butterflies. It allows them to drink and rest, which in turn will help your garden thrive. Ensure some objects are not submerged in water; if they fall into the water, they will climb out easily.
