It’s good practice to update your skincare regime every few or so. From personal experience the products that worked for me in my 20’s didn’t work in my 30’s. Likewise, the products that worked in my 30’s didn’t work in my forties. I maintained my 40’s glow with exercise, hydration and supplements. Now, in my 50’s now and I’ve kept up my selfcare regime. Although the supplements I take are different. Furthermore, my skin requires ingredients that are gentle while helping it to retain moisture when applied topically. As the season changes to autumn(winter) it’s even more of a challenge. I’ve tried my fair share of butters and creams. Some I bought others were PR samples. The best butters treated my dry sensitive skin. Allow me to share with you my tried and tested body butters for mature skin this autumn.

Ingredients I Try To Avoid

My skin when from sensitive-combination to just dry when I entered menopause. Frankly, it’s challenging to find products that ticks all the boxes when you’re menopausal and have senstive mature skin that’s ecezma prone. I’ve found that simple formulas with good qualiity ingredients is key. As a rule, I use products minimally that contain the following:

  • Too much perfume
  • Too much essential oils
  • Aloe Vera (mainly because my mum is allergic to it)
  • Parabens and Sulphates

Budget-Friendly Body Butters For Mature Skin

Akoma Shea Million Body Butter is a simple organic formula that’s gentle to use all year round. Though, I tend to use it more in autumn. By winter, the fluffy whipped texture  harden but it melts easily between the palms. I’m fond of the lavender and ylang ylang. The scent is uplifting scent. It has the perfect balance of butter to essential oil. Akoma’s body butters are made with eczema suffers (and similar skin conditions), as well as mature skin, in mind. Shea Million also adheres to vegan, fairly traded and cosmos natural principles. RRP £12.99  for 150ml.

I’ve been a firm fan of Weleda’s Skin Food for some years. I use it for all sorts. Best of all, it’s a cream everyone in my family can use. Some years ago, I visited the UK HQ to learn more about their production practices. The body butter has a fluffy whipped cream consistency and the scent was inkeeping with of the original Skin Food scent. It’s uplifting and botanical.

Skin Food Body Butter, RRP £21.95 for 150ml and contains plant extracts of soothing viola tricolour, calendula and chamomile harmonise the skin, while organic shea butter and cocoa butter leave dry skin intensively nourished. It’s non-greasy fand delivers long- lasting hydration. Skin Food Body Butter gives an instant glow up.

Now, when I find budget skincare that works … it’s a WIN! One time I popped into a local Superdrug to buy body lotion. I can’t remember what I took to the till, but the sales attendant recommended their own brand Vitamin E Body Butter. It was on offer for buy one get one half price which totalled the cost of the one I had in my basket.  At £4.99 100ml, honestly, I was septal. Now, I’m a believer. Superdrug Vitamin E Body Butter worked wonders and it lasted ages. The ingredients include: natural shea and cocoa butter but are known to be moisturising which is a plus for mature skin.  Additionally, cocoa butter is often used to repair scaring which is great. It minimises hyperpigmentation if I’d had an eczema flare up.

Mid-Range Priced Body Butters

Shimirose, like Akoma is a black-owned brand that makes organic skincare. Shimirose’s Rose & Almond Shea Body Butter RRP £25 250ml, has a subtle scent. Rose is known for its soothing properties, while almond oil is anti-aging. Pairing those two together makes for an effective skincare. Like Akoma’s butter in the colder months the butter is firm due to the drop in temperature.
Tip: If you have a nut allergy ask you GP if those ingredients are safe for you

As we age our body produces less collagen. So, I began taking collagen supplements intermittently in my 40’s when I was in perimenopause. Although I had good results with bovine and marine collagen, I prefer marine collagen.Conversely, topical collagen makes my skin look and feel or hydrated. I like SBC Skincare’s Hydra Collagen Body Butter , £34 400ml, because it has a rich creamy texture and a fresh citrus scent.

The 250ml tube is easy to pop in a bag, when you’re on the go.

When I apply it at night the following morning my skin still looks moisturised. The key ingredient is; shea butter, marine collagen glycerine, kukui seed oil, vitamin E. Vitamin E is a known to be anti-inflammatory and works as an humectant and emollient.

skinSense has a vast collection of products for mature skin. I’ve tried quite a few of their face products over the years. However, their bodycare was new to me until I used Hydranet Moisturising Body Cream. I know the title says body butters but this cream is to rich I had to include it. The scent took getting used to, though. It has a more of a pharmaceutical smell BUT it worked wonders!  You get a nice big tub, RRP£28 for 400ml, of a thick cream. It absorbs quicky into the skin and can be used all year round which is great.

Hydranet Moisturising Body Cream is part of skinSense’s Hydranet collection which is made with mature skin in mind. Ingredients include; hyaluronic acid and barbary fig seed oil which promotes long-lasting moisture.

You may have noticed that the butters (cream) mentioned above contain shea or cocoa butter or both. Those butters are excellent for senstive mature skin. Therefore, if you are seeking something different to what I’ve listed above look for butters that contains one of those ingredients.
